I know that FT mechanics are not something we all concentrate on a great deal but at the end of the FT we turn up our focus because the bodies start flyin' in on rebounds and what not.
My question is - Does anyone go against regular mechanics and look at their same side for violations? I know we look at our same side for fouls so I was wondering if anyone just takes their same side for violations as well. Just curious. AAR |

I do. If I'm not mistaken this is the NCAA men's mechanic. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong on this.

This should be covered in pre-game, but it's usually one of those small items that gets overlooked. I believe the standard mechanic is the L takes the first player on the block on their side, and the players on the other side of the lane up to the one closest to the FT shooter. The T (or C on three-person) watches the shooter, the player on their side closest to the shooter, and the remainder on the opposite side. It sounds confusing, but if you draw it out, or picture it, it makes sense because those players are in your line-of-sight.
I say to cover it in pre-game because I have worked with partners that assumed we were just watching the same side (the players with their backs to us), and we've missed obvious violations as a result. It's best to be on the same page.

i pre-game that anyone who sees violations ON THE OFFENSE should kill the play right away, regardless of side. even if it's the trail.
always a good get, as any hesitation on this one shows the primary official is not focused "fist? shooting team? defense?"
