I know you don't attend any of the schools involved with the tourney, but did you attend and if so, was it just as a fan?

If we're talking about the Big East tourney still - I watched a good number of games on TV. Wish I could have gone in person! (Instead, I had the honor of scorekeeping 11,000 A-10 women's tournament games the previous weekend - at least it pays better!)

I am clearly in the younger guy camp and I agree very much with those that have said the older D1 guys call out of their primary areas. They seem to still call a two man game. The newer D1 officials are more cognizant of the system. The two biggest things that I have noticed are the higher number of calls that come from the Lead especially across the lane in the Center's primary and the tendency to pass on collisions in the paint when a player control (or team control) foul would be the correct call. Specifically, I saw the pass and crash no called several times including at the end of the UAB/DePaul game. I think that it cost DePaul an NCAA bid too.

Mark,
I was hoping that you would get the chance to keep the book for a few of the ACC tourney games at the MCI center in DC.

I was hoping that, too! :p

One of the other GW table guys actually called either UMD or the ACC to see if they needed people to work it. Apparently, the ACC brings in their own table crew for the tourney each year. I'd probably have to be 60 before a slot ever opened up on that crew.

I, too, would agree with most officials on here about the veterans calling wherever they please. However, I will also add this: They have earned the right to make calls wherever they need to in order to manage the game in whatever manner they see fit!

I have been a college official for 2 years now...working at the D-III & NAIA level. When I work games with more experienced college officials, or when I go to camp with D-I officials, I know my place...and that is RIGHT IN MY PRIMARY! When I work with guys on my experience level, I understand I can go a little outside of my area to get things I think need to be gotten.
