Is the push in the back on a lay up an automatic intentional foul?

Saw this in a AAU tourney this w/e and the offical called an intentional right away. It was not a hard foul just a push in the back on a lay up.

I would call what happen first. The defender better look like they are playing the ball for me not to call an intentional foul.

BTW, the board has been really slow this morning for some reason.

Peace

I have seen this alot in AAU and Rec ball with Teenagers. I call it an intentional everytime and never get a hassle.

Obviously you call every play as it happens, but 99% of the time I'm going intentional on this. Times when I haven't are usually due to the defender just losing their balance and pushing the offensive player.

I had to take this call from a partner once this year. I was T and he was going to call a normal shooting foul. It was a clear frustration foul, no pretense at going for the ball, and two hands square in the back. I felt somewhat bad taking it from him, until he mentioned during the next ball that he wasn't going to go intentional on it. Then I was glad I did. First year guy who was otherwise a good partner.

Nice job! And nice job explaining it to him and talking it over. That way he nails it next time!

It all depends. If it's only one hand on the back I'll use my judgement in whether or not an intentional foul will be appropriate. If it's a two-handed push, then it's automatic.

Stripes33 EVERY TIME!!!!!

If I'm not mistaken, if an intentional foul occurs on the shooter while a 3-pointer is being attempted, if the 3-pointer is missed, its 3 shots and the ball, right? I've never seen this and hopefully never will. But not QUITE everytime right?

3 shots on a missed 3pt FG
2 shots on a good 3pt FG
