Hey.
Just had to pass this one along. First round of state playoffs Saturday. Home team won in FIFTH overtime, 95-92. Winning points came on a 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds on the clock, buzzer sounding as the ball flew toward the basket. I know you guys love reffing close games, but I could just imagine the officials thinking "fun is fun, but this is ridiculous".

Bet they were glad they didn't have a second game.

If I were to referee a 5OT game in a provincial varsity champioship tournament, I do think that would be the most enjoyable game I will have ever done, to date.
Who cares how many OTs there are? The kids decide the game. I'm happy that I'm a part of it.

Chris, funny you should say that. After the fourth OT a lot of people got up from their seats, like they were leaving. My first thought was, "why are you leaving now!?". Almost to a person, they made a beeline for the restrooms!
Ref got a lot of practice on his toss.

Had a 4 OT JV game this year between two rival schools.
Obviously not the importance of a playoff but still very heated. At the start of the fourth OT, one of the varsity coaches looks at me with a smile as I said "We like it here so much we don't want to go home." Same two teams played the following Friday and the winner of the OT game had a last second 3 pointer waived off after the horn which would have won it. Talk about tow evenly matched teams. Of course my wife had left 4 messages on my phone thinking I was just hanging around watching the varsity game and ignoring her. Partner's wife did the same. |
