A question came up in our association from a game situation this week.

A1 is dribbling in the backcourt, passes the ball to A2. A2 jumps from the frontcourt, catches the pass and lands in the backcourt.

Rulings and comments are welcome.......

If the pass is caught in the air and then A2 lands in the backcourt, it's a violation. A2 has front court status when he catches the ball in the air -- therefore the him and the ball have FC status, when he lands in the backcourt with the ball he now has backcourt status -- therefore a violation.

Edit: Clarfied a little more

Just a little tweak - The airborne player catches the ball with two hands, then starts dribbling the ball in the backcourt, before he lands in the backcourt. BC or not?

Another tweak - Instead of catching the ball, the airborne player bats the ball to the floor, beginning his dribble, with the ball bouncing in the backcourt, before he lands in the backcourt. BC or not?

Still a violation in both cases as A2 still had front court status, giving the ball front court status as soon as he touched it. Once the ball subsequently touches the floor in backcourt, it is a violation if any team A player is first to touch it.

Yep, both are violations.
