I just wanted to start a thread to congratulate some forum members for their playoff assignments.

Tom, I'm waiting to see where your playoff games will be! I appreciate your kind words, my game is tonight at 7pm at Allegheny. I can't wait, and seems like the weather will not be bad for a trip thru the mountains.

Hi. I have been on this board this year and followed your posts with interest. I like the rules-even though I don't know them all yet. Was wondering if there is anyway I could get your playoff schedule. I live in Sacramento and get to Reno alot. I would like to meet you and see you at work. Mike

Now are you guys talking about the State Finals? Or are you just talking about some lower playoff game. I am assuming you guys got what we call a State Finals Games. Which for us means the last 8 teams left standing in a particular class.

Sometimes our local terminology is different across the country. Just want to know what accomplishment you guys have actually achieved.

JRut, they will be doing games for the final 8 teams (boys & girls) in 4 classes (1A-4A). In the past years it has been in Reno and that is where I met them at (had the 3A boys final game with AAR and Nevadaref was on the clock). It is close to a guarantee that they will get the Final (very last game) in one of the classes along with their semis.

Now does your state play all the Boy's and Girl's games in the same weekend?

Each class here has their own weekend. For example

Class A Girl's--Feb. 25 & 26 (Bloomington--Girl's)
Class AA Girl's--March 4 & 5
Class A Boy's--March 11 & 12 (Peoria--Boy's)
Class AA Boy's--March 18 & 19

So officials that work a State Final or go deep into the playoffs in one class, it is very unlikely they would be able to do the same in another class. I have heard of states assigning both genders at State Tournaments. I just wanted to know if that is how they do it in your state.

Nevada's state semi-finals and finals take place from Thursday @ 2:00ish with the last final starting on Saturday @ 6:00ish.
Every class(1A-4A) has B&G semifinals and finals. It's kind of odd because we have the big school finals on Friday night(4A) and the rest of the finals are on Saturday throughout the day. It's always been that way and I am not sure why. It's Nevada, that's why. I mean we are having our frickin' state tournament in a casino, for cryin' out loud. I love it though.

Well our state has two Super-Sectional Boy's Tournament games (the level that determines who goes to the Final 8 or State Finals Tournament) at the United Center in Chicago where the Bulls play. For some reason they have Liquor Ads on the electronic screen going around the stadium while these games are going on. Of course they cannot sell liquor at these games. But when the Big Ten Men's Tournament is going on in the same building about a week later, you cannot find any signs of liquor ads in the arena. Now at the Big Ten Tournament they do sell liquor in a bar in the stadium, but you cannot leave this small area with your drink. So you cannot walk around the concourse at all with any alcoholic beverage at any time during the Big Ten event. I just find it funny that it is OK to advertise to a bunch of kids that are in HS, but you cannot advertise to a bunch of adults in the same arena with mostly adults in attendance.

Funny how the world works I guess. :D

Rut, Your point about the beer and advertising at the Big Ten tourney is hilarious! Nevada is one of the only truly free states in the nation. We can smoke, drink, gamble, shoot shotguns, and otherwise do what we want, where we want.
It is an amazing state.

As for what it means to work games at our state tournament, here's the info:
It is the last FOUR teams standing in each class. When tomegun was here, it was the last eight for the 1A and 4A and last four in the 2A and 3A, but money cutbacks have changed that.
All four classes for both the boys and girls are contested the same weekend in the same city.
So there are four teams in the 1A girls, four in the 1A boys, four in the 2A girls, ...., up to the last four teams in the 4A boys.

If your association picks you to work state you work nothing less than a semi-final. Oh, and as AAR says you get to have a fun time in the casino between games!

I think working these games is a pretty big responsibility. I truly hope to be at my best.

PS My first round regional tonight was the #6 seed (8-8 in league) upsetting the #3 seed (10-6 in league) in the boys 3A class on the road. Great game with great partners. Never more than a six point lead until the last two free throws clinched it for the visitors.


AAR had a 67-66 game in the girls 4A. He always upstages me. :)

Is it a rarity to get playoff games in other states?

I've never worked less than two in a season, and usually more. Perhaps our system is setup differently here.

In NY, the coaches submit names of officials they would like to work their games. If the official submited for is in the top percentile, he's in.

Oh Yes, BBR...it is indeed rare here in eastern WA.

We've got guys in our association that have worked for 15 plus years...and still have never received a playoff game.

We send in the top 20 rated officials in our association to the district office. From there, they are selected by AD's, coaches and the district staff. Those officials selected will then do our district and regional games...this year we had 12 officials selected to do district and regional playoff games.
Our association decides who has the privledge of going to the State Tournament. The Number One rated official gets the first choice of what classification he wants to work. The second rated official gets the next choice, and right on down the line, depending on how many assignments our association receives.

We started a "gentleman's rule" a few years ago...that after an official has worked 2 State Tournaments in a row...that official must "sit" one year. This affords an oportunity for an official that might not otherwise get a chance to work a State Tournament.

We usually only send a total of 4 officials to all the Boy's State Tournament classifications combined, and there are 5 classifications...so we don't even get to have our association represented in one of the classifications...therefore, around here, it is indeed a privledge and an honor to have a State Tournament assignment.
