Refereeing primarily intermurals, I get more than my share of moaning and groaning. As long as its not distracting, I'll normally let it go. I take pride in really emphasizing trying to teach players quickly if its a rule they aren't sure about...i.e. calling a foul for moving someone back 2 feet while boxing out. Kids seem to think thats what you're supposed to do when you box out.

Intermurals is filled with the idea of warnings. However, one immediate thing that does not get a warning is any cuss word directed at me or my partners. A cuss word for a missed shot or something like that will normally get a warning as well... but directed to me means T.

Just my humble thoughts

I know where you're coming from Bradford. Being an intramural official myself, I tend to give warnings to players about their language when its cussing to themsleves about missed shots etc, but when it's a loud F-Bomb or other cussing, or if they challenge the integrity of me or my partner, I whack them. Also, I'll give warnings along the lines of let us worry about reffing and you worry about playing. Plus if a team is getting blow out, I'll tend to just ignore most comments so the game will go on an end.

I can tell you from a coaches standpoint, because I've been there, when it's crunchtime and the game is on the line, I don't want anything that could be even the slightest bit controversial from an official to be handed to me. I prefer the official to stay out of the way and let the players determine the outcome, just as I did when I played (any sport).
I can tell you from an official's standpoint, because I've been there, when it's crunchtime and the game is on the line, I want a partner who doesn't give a damn about whether his call is gonna be "controversial" or not, or whether it's gonna affect the game or not either. I want a partner with the testicular fortitude to make the proper and appropriate call, not swallow their whistle because they're afraid of offending a coach or the fans, or worry about what a coach is gonna think of their call.

I think that we'll still just have to agree to disagree on this one. Your game-calling philosophy is just completely foreign to everything that I believe in. Jmo.

I primarily do HS games but I do my share of IMs too. I disagree with the philosophy of letting this BS go or warning the IM players because doing so simply makes things worse down the road. I don't care what level the game, players must demonstrate respect for my authority and for the game, otherwise they will be penalized. Letting griping go on only leads to more of it.

You're not the only one with this opinion :)
