Tonight had a call which I believe was the right call by the rule book and stood by firmly...
Team A up 2 points, about 20 seconds left, out of bounds under Team B's basket for an inbound pass (dead ball, not made basket). Full court press from B... B1 is aggressively guarding the ball and reaches over the line and slaps the ball. Whistle! Technical Foul. (2 shots and ball for A) Checked it by my partner who agreed with the direct call, rather than a warning. Player and captain (intermurals, so equivilent to coach) demanded that it is a warning first. My understanding of the rule is if he reaches over, its a warning... but if he touches the ball behind the line, its an automatic tech. Ironically, A shooter missed both free throws and they turned it over on the inbound pass, allowing Team B to score at the buzzer to tie the game (no OT in regualar intermural season, everyone gets to go to playoffs) But for future reference, was I in the right? Or would you issue a warning. Thoughts appreciated. |

So it wasn't a made basket, so the ball was in A's hand which would make it a live ball.
But anyways, you were correct with your call. Reaching over the plane is a warning, contacting the inbounder is an intentional personal foul, and touching the ball is a T. Good job!!

You got it right
I don't have a rule book before me but I remember we discussed this call at an officals meeting recently and you made the correct call. I'm not a big fan of having to call that one but there is a lot reaching over the line in a tight game; although, my opinion has little to do with the rules of the game and has all to do with thier enforcement. In lesser league play I point out to defenders on both teams early in the game the verticality of the line that divides inbounder and defender.

If you wanted a rule reference, 9-2-Penalty 4:
"If an opponent(s) of the thrower reaches through the throw-in boundary-line plane and touches or dislodges the ball while in possession of the thrower or being passed outside the boundary line, a technical foul shall be cahrged to the offender. No warning for delay required."

Yeah - it's a T.
In intramurals, you'll find that nearly everyone wants some form of a warning before being T'd up. If one isn't required, don't feel any need to give them one!
