It's funny how these terms mean different things depending on which state you are in. Our first week is called "regionals" here and the second week is called "sectionals." If you win the sectional, you go to the state tournament in Madison.
Rich,

Has there been any info down your way regarding the state tournament going to 3 whistle? Had a discussion with someone last week who seems to be in the know that said next year for 3 whistle is a done deal. Any word? Others from WI?

zakman2005000.....

3-whistle in for State Tournament 2005-2006. Conferences can use 3-whistle next year at Varsity level only and with school approval. Situation of budget for third official hasn't been addressed by WIAA, School Districts or Conferences.

This is long overdue!

The vote of the Board of Control isn't until March, according to the Preps column in this morning's Wisconsin State Journal. I find a lot of fault with some of the opinions the writer made.

Do we "need" 3 officials for every game? The writer finds that whole notion silly, yet where do you draw the line?

The fastest paced HS basketball in the area (for the most part) is played at schools that probably have the tightest budget situations, don't pay mileage, and also pay the lowest game fees in the area. If you don't mandate the use of 3-officials, do you think a conference like that will institute three-whistle on its own?

High schools in this state went from 4 officials to 5 for HS varsity football games back in the mid-1990s. I'm guessing there was resistance then. Now, it's normal and accepted.

Phasing in 3-whistle is a great idea, in my opinion, but I would've included all conference games in the regular season starting a few years down the road as part of the proposal.

For me, it doesn't matter -- I probably work a dozen or more 3-whistle games a year since I'm also licensed in the state to my south where they use 3-officials for pretty much everything at the varsity level. But my concern would be that there will be officials assigned that aren't fluent in 3-whistle basketball and a crew like that would be better off working with 2 on the floor. That's the exact thing that happened when we went to 3-whistle in another state for the playoffs about ten years ago.

Rich, I've seen firsthand that the assigner must be on point because they can use the weak 3rd official as a reason to go back to two. It happened in Nevada up until they split what nights they play games on from two nights to four nights a week. This allowed for stronger crews. I'm sure there were other reasons but this played a part. In the DC area certain schools/leagues use 2 or 3 depending on money and/or if the coach wants to get away with more stuff.

Many coaches and ADs have made the "Weak 3rd guy argument" in Northern Nevada but the way it goes around here(and it is slowly changing) is if they aren't familiar with the official they label him "the weak 3rd guy".

We have sent out letters telling people they have been selected but we are doing the scheduling for Zone(that is our first round local) tonight and Sunday. Then we are doing our portion of the scheduling for state spots next Sunday.

BTW - the state tournament for Nevada will be held in the Orleans CASINO. Only in Nevada.

TR, link isn't working. Are you serious? They are going south with the tournament? They must be having it in the new part of the Orleans they were building before I left or where they have boxing. I liked coming up to Reno.

The Class A Regional Boy's Tournament assignments just came out.

I am working one, but not the championship. This is my first Class A Boy's playoff assignment.

Peace

In Oregon, we have "league" tie-breakers on one weekend. Then the top four teams from each league are seeded into a "subtournament" which is set up as loser-out. Eight ultimate subtourney victors in each class go to the tournament. That's the structure for four different size "classes" for girls, and the same for boys. Eight total sub-tournaments, eight total tournaments.
