Have a BB question: When a player is throwing a ball inbounds does he have to keep his spot? or can he move a little? This is not on a made shot. And I know alot of yall think you know the answer, but if anyone has the rule I would like to see a link to it to.

thanks

and, Im not talking about on a made basket.

NCAA Rulebook:
http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/20...ball_rules.pdf

Rule 7-6
Art. 5. The thrower-in shall not leave the designated spot until he/she has released the ball and the thrown-in ball crosses the plane of the sideline or endline.

Thanks, so you can move your feet when throwing the ball inbounds....you do not have to use a piviot foot....

xbear,
Germane to your question is the following fundamental:

Basketball Rules Fundamentals - 5. "Neither the dribble nor traveling rule operates during the jump ball, throw-in or free throw."

Thanks for reminding us of the Fundamentals. (page 74 of the 2004-2005 NFHS book) I think we nitpick the rules while overlooking the common sense of the fundamentals.

I knew you could move your feet, but was challaged and they said you had to have a piviot foot.....I knew I was right, but didnt have the rule or could remember the exact rule on it....all I could remember was you could move 3 feet side to side.....but I like your Basketball rules Rundamentals.....

I do have another question, if someone does move outside the 3 foot spot, what does the ref call? If you cant travel out of bounds?

Not traveling, but a throw in violation.
Tweet, point other way.

SECTION 2 THROW-IN PROVISIONS
A player shall not violate the following provisions governing the throw-in.
The thrower shall not:
ART. 1 . . . Leave the designated throw-in spot until the ball has been released on a throw-in pass.

gotcha, and the designated throw-in spot is 3 feet wide and you can go back as far as you want....Right?

Right back to the bleachers, but you can't climb on the bleachers.

Correct...basically you can move one step in either direction from the 'spot'..

There is no such violation as a "spot travel". The thrower has to keep one foot on or over the 3-foot wide designated spot while while making the throw-in. If you're not sure, don't call it. Dev just told you the way that we usually identify the violation, is all.
