Have a BB question: When a player is throwing a ball inbounds does he have to keep his spot? or can he move a little? This is not on a made shot. And I know alot of yall think you know the answer, but if anyone has the rule I would like to see a link to it to.

thanks

and, Im not talking about on a made basket.

Jimgolf Sat Feb 05, 2005 07:54am

NCAA Rulebook:
http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/20...ball_rules.pdf

Rule 7-6
Art. 5. The thrower-in shall not leave the designated spot until he/she has released the ball and the thrown-in ball crosses the plane of the sideline or endline.

thee xbear Sat Feb 05, 2005 07:58am

Thanks, so you can move your feet when throwing the ball inbounds....you do not have to use a piviot foot....

thanks...

BktBallRef Sat Feb 05, 2005 09:37am

We all know the answer.

xbear,
Germane to your question is the following fundamental:

Basketball Rules Fundamentals - 5. "Neither the dribble nor traveling rule operates during the jump ball, throw-in or free throw."

Thanks for reminding us of the Fundamentals. (page 74 of the 2004-2005 NFHS book) I think we nitpick the rules while overlooking the common sense of the fundamentals.

I knew you could move your feet, but was challaged and they said you had to have a piviot foot.....I knew I was right, but didnt have the rule or could remember the exact rule on it....all I could remember was you could move 3 feet side to side.....but I like your Basketball rules Rundamentals.....

I do have another question, if someone does move outside the 3 foot spot, what does the ref call? If you cant travel out of bounds?

Ref Daddy Sat Feb 05, 2005 11:26am

Not traveling, but a throw in violation.
Tweet, point other way.

SECTION 2 THROW-IN PROVISIONS
A player shall not violate the following provisions governing the throw-in.
The thrower shall not:
ART. 1 . . . Leave the designated throw-in spot until the ball has been released on a throw-in pass.

gotcha, and the designated throw-in spot is 3 feet wide and you can go back as far as you want....Right?

Right back to the bleachers, but you can't climb on the bleachers.

devdog69 Sat Feb 05, 2005 12:36pm

Correct...basically you can move one step in either direction from the 'spot'..

There is no such violation as a "spot travel". The thrower has to keep one foot on or over the 3-foot wide designated spot while while making the throw-in. If you're not sure, don't call it. Dev just told you the way that we usually identify the violation, is all.

[/B][/QUOTE]Not only is this a nation-wide forum, but people from several different countries also post here. There are people posting here that use NFHS, NCCAA and FIBA rulesets. You can also usually get a pretty good answer about NBA rules also.

No. There's no such thing.

And there's no limit to the number of steps a player can take. He/she only need to keep one foot over the spot.

djmforce Sat Feb 05, 2005 02:18pm

Based on the following information, can the thrower-in have one foot place on the boundary line, and if so can the toe of the foot be in the court while standing on the boundary line? I can not find any passage in the NCAA, NBA or FIBA rule books that states otherwise.

NCAA 2005 Rule Book
RULE 9-5/VIOLATIONS AND PENALTIES
Section 5. Throw-in
Art. 1. The thrower-in shall not:
a. Leave a designated spot.
b. Fail to pass the ball directly into the playing court so that after it crosses the boundary line, it touches or is touched by another player (in bounds or out of bounds) on the playing court before going out of bounds.
c. Execute a throw-in that lodges between the backboard and the ring or comes to rest on the flange.

A.R. 12. During a throw-in by Team A, A1’s (a) foot breaks the plane of the boundary
line or (b) A1’s hand(s) and the ball break the plane of the boundary line.
RULING: No violation in either (a) or (b).

The player may touch the boundary line and may be over the boundary line as long as they're not touching inbounds. It's mentioned somewhere about "carrying the ball onto the court".

Almost.

Tweet. Raise hand. Point to the original spot with the index finger. Sweep the hand away from the spot in the direction that the player moved. Then point the direction of the new possession.

Mark,
If I quit responding to Y'all, I'd have to stop visiting with my daughter who was swallowed U.P. by Cold Mountain and the Great Smokies.
