I do remember when the official after counting
a 5 second count approached the defense and shouted
"PLAY BALL" The defense had to come within 3 or 6
feet of the ball. If the offense was behind, the
official would visually count 5 seconds, approach
the offense and point to the direction of their
basket and shout "play Ball". they had to penetrate
the ball past the hash mark.
