Interesting scenario last night. Girls 8th grade. Decent game.

Subs at table. I'm T and becon them in. Both players being SUBSTITUTED FOR then turn and run the opposite direction out of the gym! Observing I saw they were heading fro the water fountain in the hallway. Looked very poor in my game management.

Q: Section 3 Substitutions apply rules to incoming players. What are responsibilities of the EXITING players?

Oh my! They went in the hallway and got a drink. According to this year's POE #3A, that's supposed to be technical fouls all around.

Go get those Grade 8's!

????

Why does it matter to you if they are thirsty or not. What do you mean by poor game management. They are no longer players, let them drink water. Maybe their water bottles were empty.

Gasp!

You mean that you haven't read POE #3A?

"The committee is also concerned about bench personnel leaving the bench, sometimes during a live ball. Heading into the hallway to get a drink or sitting up in the stands with friends or family, even for a short period of time, are not authorized unless they are medically related. Coaches must ensure that bench personnel remain on the bench".

3-3-3 - Player becomes bench personnel

Do I detect a note of sarcasm?

Now that we got the sarcasm out of the way......

The purpose and intent of the POE? Seriously. Do you really want grade 8 girls from the bench roaming the halls without supervision? Do you want high school players out in the hall mingling with a hostile crowd? If anything does happen, whose a$$ is now in a sling? The coach for letting them do it? Me, for allowing them to do it?

I think that's where the FED is coming from on this one. And I also think that you have to handle each individual situation with some good judgement.

In case you didn't fight your way through the dripping sarcasm, JR is serious and the POE he quoted is real. Once the players have been substituted the "exit-ers" are now bench personnel.

As a referee, surely you are not also going to patrol the halls, stands, bathrooms, etc. The coach should keep his players on the bench.

Sometimes you see a facetious post - this was not one.
