I have just called a foul on this teams center who puts his knee into the other teams guard as drives to the basket. I report the foul to the bench. I am informed it is the center's 5th foul. I go tho the coach and inform him of the 5th foul when he replies " You should be ashamed of yourself, this kid whole family has come to see him play. His Grandpa,Grandma and all his aunts and uncles and it is only two minutes into the 4th quarter" It was all I could do not to laugh. Then this coach makes the kid stand on the court for the full alloted time so he can tell me again how mean I was being. This has to be a 1st!

To think if you did the proper mechanic you'd have missed out. The non-calling official is to notify the coach.:D

I've seen sooo mnay guys that don't do it the proper way. It argh's me!

JRutledge Mon Jan 24, 2005 11:12pm

That depends on what mechanics you are using.

That is not the "proper way." It is the option of the official to decide which way is best. At least when we are talking about 3 Person Mechanics.

Peace

Unless you're in a crew of three. In PA the calling official notifies in a 3-man crew because he's staying at the table, and we've trickled that down to 2-man for lower level games. It's more efficient and keeps things moving along more smoothly. The calling official notified for years until they started having the new table-side official notify in 3-man and the felt a need to have something comparable for the smaller crews. Now that the new table-side is the calling official it seems to make sense to just take care of things and get it over with.

This comes pretty close to casting a shadow on my integrity. Would anybody call a T for this?

"Well, now they'll all have more time to go for ice cream afterwards."

The rule book simply says the officials will notify the head coach when a player is disqualified. My state still has the calling official do it, especially given that the calling official stays tableside. So do many others.

"Wow, Coach! Why didn't you tell me that before the game? Then, I could have passed on those 5 fouls like I did on the other 15 he committed. You've got a sub coming for me right?"

:D

After he said this much, I'd tell him that was enough. Any further griping about how mean I am and I am liable to just get meaner. The "You should be ashamed of yourself" may have earned him a T, depending on how vocal he'd been the rest of the game.

Mean? Mean? He's out there fouling the crap out of people, and I'm mean?

2003-05 Officials Manual

In the 2003-05 Officials Manual, which I believe is the current manual with the correct mechanics except for the change to 3-person staying table-side when reporting says:

2-person Basic Procedures and Mechanics
page 37 i. The non-calling official shall notify the coach and then the player on a disqualification and will administer substitutions

3-person Basic Procedures and Mechanics
page 69 i. The trail official shall notify the coach and then the player on a disqualification and will administer the substitutions.

I know the 3-person has now changed due to the updated mechanic to stay table-side when reporting a foul, but the 2-person mechanic says the non-calling informs.

That is the exact thing I was thinking.

I inform the coach, start the 30-second clock, and go inform the player. I don't get NEAR the bench again until the 20-second horn goes off. If he wants to tell me how awful I am, he's gonna have to shout it and he's likely to get whacked.

If this was the first thing the coach had said to me, no. But what are the chances of that having happened in the fourth quarter. Q1, "That is enough of that coach.", Q4, "T".
But I wouldn't condemn anyone who T this up in Q1.
