In tonight's Charlotte/East Carolina game, there was a scramble for the ball under East Carolina's basket. A held ball was called, with the AP arrow pointing towards Charlotte. After the held ball was called, a flagrant foul was called on a Charlotte player, and he was ejected. The officials told the Charlotte coach that there was a flagrant foul on his player and that player was ejected. They also said that there was no fight , so the player would not have to sit out the next game. The officials were very adamant about this. They also said that because of the flagrant foul, the held ball would be ignored, so East Carolina was given 2 free throws and the ball.
Was this the correct interpretation of the NCAA rules?

7-5-14
After a flagrant personal foul or an intentional personal foul, a player of the team to whom the throw-in has been awarded shall make the throw-in from a designated spot nearest the where the foul occurred.

He didn't say it was a flagrant technical foul. He said it was a flagrant foul, implying personal.
If the foul did indeed happen AFTER the held ball and was a technical, then he needs to clarify that. Either way, the ruling was correct. [Edited by BktBallRef on Jan 8th, 2005 at 10:30 PM]
