You folks concerned about this? - maybe just my pet peave.

Player reports to table. Table sounds horn - new player takes off like a rabbit onto the floor official whistle or not.

What do you do?

I haven't yet found the need to T a player up for this, I just tell them, "Hey, Where do you think you're going, get back, back up, lets go..." and just as they get back in front of the table out of bounds I say, "Ok, come on in"

I guess if they refused to leave the court I'd T them up, but it hasn't happened yet.

Usually I will stop the player, send them back and then tell them its okay. I usually remind the coach to make sure his players wait until I call them in. Second time around I would issue the technical. Usually I don't have this problem except with lower levels.

If the horn sounds on a deal ball and I was going to bring them in anyway, I couldn't care less. Come on in.

Now if I have something to take care of (report a foul or whatever), I'll make them go back, but otherwise let's just play.

Agree with all. This is not an "automatic" and some real judgement needs to come into play. While it is a part of overall game management, it is one more easily handled by sending the player back then bringing them in if nothing more than emphasis of the rule but not to embarras the player either.

Bingo, this is where it happens most of the time. Usually I'm quick to get them in, however if they come in and I have some business to take of with the table I will make sure I round them back up until I'm finished.

I have both this problem, and the opposite. Whistle, "sub!" beckon, beckon, "sub!", whistle, Double whistle, "Hey!! Sub!! Come on in!!" beckon.

:D Maybe they don't want to come in! That'd be interesting. A sub refusing to come into the game...hmmmmm. :)

Had a freshman girl's game yesterday and had this same problem. Perhaps teenage girls really ARE deaf (I know my 10 yo and 3 yo are!) ;)

I've been tempted a couple of times to just start play without them when they don't come right in. Let them wait until the next chance and see how well they listen then.

I think one of the funniest things that can happen with subs is when the official is on top of it, and right after the horn beckons in the sub, the sub notices it, but the coach misses it and tells his player to wait for the referee, then the player tries to tell the coach that they were already beckoned. The look on the coaches face can get pretty funny :)

A few years back, our CYO 4th, 5th, and 6th grade girls team had a 4th grader who was so shy at the beginning of the year, she would not go into the game at all. (Imagine that on a team where everyone is uspposed to get in the game). But by the time she was a 5th grader, she couldn't wait to get in the game :D

Just tell them to wait until you beckon them into the game and move on. I make sure they are not coming in the game until someone says it is OK. I will make a big production out of it, but I will not give a T because of it. Usually you just have to do it once and everyone gets the message.

I don't want to jack the thread but Refdaddy do you hit the whistle along with the horn? If so, do you do women's college? For HS or college games (men) I don't like this in most situations. Just one of my peeves. Does anyone else do this? If so, why do you do this right after the horn sounds? I know it is supposed to be done like this in women't college but as far as I know that is the only place.

Oh, if a sub comes in I will do various things but the way to get that particular player from doing it again if they've made it all the way on to the court amongst the other players is to ask a simple question: "who brought you into the game?" Typed words can't show voice tone so I will tell you I don't say this with a smart tone rather a question to get them to understand that someone should have beckoned them onto the court prior to them coming in the game. If nobody did this they understand that they shouldn't have came in. After that we play but I will not T someone up for this alone.

I also have a problem with players doing a U turn at the table. I simple back them up, make then go down on one knee at the x and then bring them in. I also tell both coaches. This usually solves the issue.
