I know that basketball is a religion in some areas, but I don't know that genuflecting is a requirement. ;)

Yeah, I agree, but our observers eat people alive with this one.

Few extra points -

Note a new thread developing on same topic/issue

In response - No, in my initial question/post it is implied that I had NOT blown my whistle. The player's act only off of the horn.

As suggestion - TABLE MANAGEMENT is a good game management way to stop or control this behavior. I am keen onmentioning to the table that I want to hold them. That avoids embarrasing the kids or compromising my rules enforcement.

Am I correct - the horn signals the referee, not a signal to the player?

I do HS. V and JV

hey ref, sub

What about the coach that starts hollering sub before he/she has even picked out a player off of the bench.

I just continue with my normal routine and if that sub is not at the table before I am ready to begin, the coach usually loses that one.

I usually do a quick pregame with the table people. I tell them that the player has to be in place in order to come into the game. No horns as the player is running from the bench.

Maybe they don't want to come in! That'd be interesting. A sub refusing to come into the game...hmmmmm. :)
I've never had that sitch, but I have had a player who was seriously upset that I called a foul that sent him to the line. He did not want the FTs. Apparently, he just was having a miserable time at the line. It was kind of funny, although he didn't think so. His teammates gave him a mixture of razzing and encouragement.

I don't want to jack the thread but Refdaddy do you hit the whistle along with the horn? If so, do you do women's college? For HS or college games (men) I don't like this in most situations. Just one of my peeves. Does anyone else do this? If so, why do you do this right after the horn sounds? I know it is supposed to be done like this in women't college but as far as I know that is the only place.

Oh, if a sub comes in I will do various things but the way to get that particular player from doing it again if they've made it all the way on to the court amongst the other players is to ask a simple question: "who brought you into the game?" Typed words can't show voice tone so I will tell you I don't say this with a smart tone rather a question to get them to understand that someone should have beckoned them onto the court prior to them coming in the game. If nobody did this they understand that they shouldn't have came in. After that we play but I will not T someone up for this alone.

I always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS whistle subs in.

My partners do as well.

There's only ever ONE whistle. The official without the ball (2-whistle) and the appropriate official (3-whistle). We don't wait for the horn to blow and as far as I'm concerned, I don't care if there's ever a horn. If we need the horn, we're not looking for subs like we should.

We're given the whistle to communicate. Not only does the whistle get the attention of the sub, it also gets the attention of my partner(s).

I think NOT whistling in subs looks weak, regadless of what mechanics manual is being used. Again, this is just MY opinion. Also, on three-whistle we ALWAYS ake sure that the sub is "passed" on to the appropriate official (in other words, not the lead and not the guy with the ball) in a throw in situation.

While I'm admitting such a terrible faux pas, I'll also admit I whistle on every throw-in on the baseline (frontcourt).

I got a whistle, it gets people's attention, I use it. Sue me.
