The following question is in the California Study Guide (200) questions. I am getting different answers from different people and cannot find a clear cut answer in the case book or rule book.

By the way we have a shot clock, 35 for boys and 30 for girls and use a six foot coaching box in California and the mercy rule was just adopted this year. 40 points or more in the fourth quarter.

This is the situation:

"The ball is in flight when airborne A1 is fouled in the act of shooting as the 2nd quarter ends. the try is successful. Prior to A1 shooting the free throw, coach B is assessed with a technical foul.

(REFERENCES 5.6.3, 4-1, CASE BOOK 5.6 COMMENT A.)

(a) Administer the technical foul free throws as part of the second quarter. The 3rd quarter begins with a throw-in according to the alternating-possession arrow.

(b) Administer the technical foul free throws as part of the 3rd quarter. The quarter begins with a throw in by team A.

(a).

The quarter hasn't ended, so the T was part of the 2nd quarter.

Cool

The correct answer is A. This period does not end until the free throws for the "shooting" foul are administered. Any activity prior to that is part of the 2nd quarter.

The quarter or extra period ends when the free throw(s) and all related activity have been completed. No penalty or part of a penalty carries over from one quarter or extra period to the next.

Mike,
The comment about no part of a penalty carrying over to the next period is the reason why the 3rd quarter is started with an AP throw-in instead of awarding possession as normal after technical foul FTs.
