Ok, this didn't totally happen...but my daughter and I are wondering what happens, if a player shoots a ball and it goes UP through the basket and then comes back down? Or, if it goes UP through the basket and bounces out of the top?

We had a player that shot it up through the basket, but it didn't go all the way through and just came back down. They just "rebounded" it and kept going.

I have misplaced my rule books from last year so can't look it up myself (I know, for shame!!).

Anyway, what's the call and what is the rule? I told my daughter I would ask at my association meeting, but I'm afraid of the ribbing I'd get! Thanks everyone.

Rules reference is NFHS R9-4.

Violation.

...and as soon as it passes through from bottom to top. If it goes partially into the net but doesn't go through, it's nothing.

Since you don't have your book, here's what R9-4 actually says: A player shall not travel with the ball, as in 4-49, intentionally kick it, as in 4-29, strike it with the fist or cause it to enter and pass though the basket from below.

So it's a violation on the shooter? Guess that could be a pretty cool strategy if it wasn't a violation.

Sorry, I'm a pretty new ref so haven't had all these wierd situations yet. I'm sure you all have been over this many times before.

just wondering, i have seen point guards receive an inbounds pass and non chalantly toss it in the air and with a closed fist hit the ball down to start their dribble, wouldn't this be considered striking it with their fist??? what is the rationale of not allowing this to happen???

The rule was originally put in for safety reasons. They didn't want players punching at sumthin', and then possibly missing and whacking somebody.

Not the intent of the rule, IMHO. They don't want people trying to steal the ball or to knock it away from others by punching the ball with the fist. If they miss, you have a punch that might land on a face. Now, was that punch a fight or was it just a missed steal? Even if it were innocent, will it trigger a real fight? Even if there were no confusion, it would still hurt a lot more than being hit with an open hand.

I seem to recall that this call was made in an NBA game a few years back.
