I get a phone call today and it is from a coach from a local High School. He says hey Brandan, a week from Thursday we have a scrimage do you want to come and work with Butch (the schools princeapal.) I said sure why not.. Then he gets on to say this is a fundraiser so I dont know if we can pay you is that ok. I told him I would get back to him.. lol.. I didnt know what else to tell him. What do you think?

Money isn't the only valuable thing you can get from working a basketball game . . .
|
I thought the definition of a scrimmage was you don't get paid. Don't worry about it. Go have fun and get ready for the season.
|
Work the game for the exercise and for the rust you'll shake off before the (pre) season starts.
|
It's not unusual to not get paid for a scrimmage. Go to work.
|
I'd take a HS varsity game for free right about now. Mid-season I'd laugh at that request but not now.
|
Donate your pay... after you get it.
I had a veteran tell me one time... don't ever do it for free. You never know when the whole thing will blow up then you are committed to suffer through it and you will feel really stupid because you are not getting paid for this abuse.
So his moral was get paid... and then if all went well and you wish to donate to the cause... donate your check back to them. Same difference but then you are not vulnerable for the unexpected problems that may arise. |
Make sure that you're insured, either with your own insurance or through the school's insurance.
|
It is rather common in my parts to get paid for a scrimmage. Not all the time of course, but most seem to pay something.
Peace |
Sure, getting paid is better then not getting paid. However, he probably called because he new you'd do a good job and I bet it wasn't easy for him to ask you to do it for gratis. It would definately be a feather in your cap (unless your cap is already full), and I think these things usually have a way of working out and coming back around. Maybe future games or something. Still it's your choice.

Insurance??
if both refs are not licensed, then the schools insurance is void...if the princ.is not licensed then tell them that!! if two of you go over that are licensed, they may find a little something for you..they usually do!!! And if not, mark it up for practice...will help down the road

probably true...
i know in our district and state, that you have to have licensed officials for insurance to be active...if not i feel sorry for the officials that would call and not have a license.... all states should be like this...it would help some of the younger players have someone calling that actually knows the rules

... I have insurance... So I am covered.

fundraiser, if its a good cause,go have fun.
