I was watching a tape of a college game I did last year. There was a travel call I made during the game that wiped away a basket. I was glad that the video confirmed that I made the correct call.

What's interesting is what I noticed after that call. We were going the other direction and I was out of position for 6-7 seconds, trail when I should have been center. I started thinking about that and I was thinking about the travel call rather the play at hand.

After some reflection, I think this is a problem for me. When I make a controversial call or a big call, it sometimes takes me a while to focus on the game again. Anyone else had to deal with this? Any suggestions?

Jay

You just have to develop a bad memory.

Good one, Snake! (the pokemon with the snake-like qualities is Ekans... get it? That's snake backwards)

Jay, I have this tendency too, and what has helped me some is to start talking to myself about what's right in front of me. "Now 42 is cutting across, 52 is setting a screen, 42 tries to go around, little bump, incidental, here comes 22..." and so on.

It's also easier to "forget" the last play if there's a tape going. That way I know I can analyze it later, and I won't forget to think through the issues.

Can't say I've ever seen pokemon, but I guess I'll just have to defer to Dan.

Jay,

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for ya. However, it is "good" reminder that all referees are just human and we go through these situations sometime.

I was at a camp in June and I made a fairly tough call (called a blocking foul) that got the coach up in my face.

As i've mentioned, I'm fairly new to officiating high school ball and some of the games at the camp were varsity games so it was a rather intense experience.

So, point is, after I made the call, i was in a daze for a while thinking about it. I sort of zoned out, thinking about the play and missing some of the action.

My partners (it was a 3 person camp) commented to me that it seemed like I was off somewhere else for a few minutes.

The camp was good, so I hope that if I do make a tough call again, I'll be able to bounce back quicker in the future. Though I know sometimes it's hard.
