Last night, at an intramural basketball program for 8-12 year olds I am running, my 9 year old son (out for three weeks with a broken thumb), asked if he could help referee one of the games. It was a big kick having him run the other side of the floor with me. After the game he asked me how people get jobs as a referee. Just in case the NBA thing doesn't work out, of course.

If i could only get him out on the golf course with me.

Of course. But unlike bball, it doesn't matter how you look as long as you sound like Jim Nance

Could you imagine Martha Burk & Hootie Johnson working together in a game

I have to disagree - golf officiating is all about presence.

Cool

I know - the referees wear black and white plaid pants.

If he starts now, he's gonna have quite the officiating carreer.

My situation is the exact opposite. I started reffing first and dragged my dad into it. It's great because we always work together, so we've developed a sort of style (good communication, mechanics, and we're really comfortable working together). Its great to finally be able to find something that my dad and I can do together.

I started to referee when I was around the same age as your son, but i didn't have the oppotunity to work along side my dad. The first few times i refereed, I was completely nervous and felt "alone". I think that it is great that some kids can have their dad's there with them to help them as they go, and not feel completely alone on the court, refereeing with "strangers".

Good luck to him with the refereeing... if the NBA thing doesn't work out of course...
