Recently I did a game in which the coach and player were father and son. I knew this before the game and have had the team a few times before.
During the game there was a play where I called a traveling violation on A1 (the son). A1 doesn't like the call and spikes the ball. Obvious T. Coach of Team A (the father) pulls A1 out of the game and scolds him. The next time I am in front of the Team A bench the coach comments to me about his son's play, "How could he be so stupid?" My response: "I'm guessing genetics." :D Of course, this was said with a big, exaggerated smile so that the coach knew that I was joking and didn't think I was trying to insult him. |

NevadRef
NevadaRef,
Please respond to the previous post. I'm interested if a coach with a big grin and smile said to you to get your eyes checked, would he get T'd? Seems like he couldnt based on the joking comment you made. Look forward to your response |
I had a coach once tell me I should get my eyes checked. I thanked him for the suggestion, but told him I liked them they color they already were.
|
Hmmm, seems to me if the dad is calling his own son stupid, it's already out of the realm of taking comments seriously. If a coach said to me, "Hey, get your eyes checked," I wouldn't like it.
But suppose we're just talking before the game and he asks me about a banner or something on the other side of the gym and I make a joke saying, "Sorry Coach, I can't see that far", then it would in no way be out of line for him to rag me about my eyesight, and I would expect a big dexter-eating grin to accompany his comments. This seems to be a similar situation. We're talking about his own dumb kid. A little razzing can't be out of line. |
BBallCoach, welcome back. Lent must be over. :(

C'mon - I was joking!
Sheesh BBall, I was joking. You know, the little wink ;) symbol. I didn't expect any serious response from Nevada - I was only yanking his chain a bit when he wasn't looking...
The games I enjoy the most are the ones where everyone is capable of displaying a bit of self-deprecating humor. Wit and sense of humor are necessary check-valves in the pressure cooker environment of the game. Like Chuck said - the coach was making light of a situation, inviting a smile or fun reaction to his comment. Nevada took the invitation and redirected the poke a little bit. Hopefully, we are all self-assured enough not to feel threatened by a fun jab at the appropriate time - and Chuck gave a good rationale about why the timing was probably appropriate. |
No one will answer my question?
Why won't any one answer my question? Would that get a coach a T? And if so why?
Thanks |

Why the T?
Mark,
Isn't this being a bit hypocritical? If the coach is smiling shouldn't the official know that means he is joking and take it as such? You except the coach to know the official is only joking correct. So why the double standard? |

Refuses to answer me
Mark,
It seems to me that your being hypocritical by saying that you would T a coach for that. He smiled so that makes it a joke right Mark? |
Mark - Isn't the 11th commandment thou shalt make d@#% sure you know the other 10? Get my drift? LOL

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), neither one can keep up with prescribing my meds. |
The coach definitely gets a "T" for those comments.

Thats absurd
It's amazing that you want to be respected and treated fairly but on the same hand you make what you assume is a joke to a coach and if they dont take it like that or give it back to you, you T him? That is a great role model for our society bait the coach into a T. You guy's are so classy. Dam! I don't get why most people disrespect offcials.

BBallCoach,
Have you looked up the rule he referenced? It's pretty clear when you read the rule book why this rule needs to be enforced in this case. We don't like to do it, but we are bound by the rules and rule 11.2.4 is very clear (one could easily call it's meaning transparent) on this issue. Please, get a rule book and look this up. As Padgett says, rule 13.3.2 leaves us absolutely no wiggle room on this. |
Why won't BBallCoach answer my question?
Is it because he won't look up the rule?

Hey BBallCoach
If you can find an official's manual, it helps to clear up this picture. It lays explicitly why jokes from coaches constitute technical fouls. I can't remember where exactly, but it's right after the portion about good refs not allowing overtime. Once again, the passage is pretty transparent, much like rule 11.2.4.

But the biggest secret we keep from coaches is discussed in casebook 4.45.1 (make up calls) shhhhhhh... |
BBALLCOACH,,I have had that said to me in a game before as i ran past the coach and did not wack him,, i just came back down the court and made my own little commit, nothing to bad, i feel one response needs another

BBall Coach
I don't understand you. I wonder if your players understand you? |
It's a beautiful world where officials bait coaches into a T. An official makes a joke to a coach, smiles= no big deal. Coach makes a joke to an official smile=T hmmmm Ahhh the good old boy network double standard. I love it! Now I realize most of you became officials as a power trip and to help out your ego's but give me a break. Last time I checked no one has ever paid to watch a bunch of offcials attempt to run up and down the court, attempting to keep pace with the true reason fans show up the kids. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong and people are actually there to see officials and sports are not about the kids at all. Let me know! Cause on a board with this many Zeus's I would hate to be wrong. Ahhh maybe some day people will appreciate officials, but ahhh probably not!
|
I think that the standard should be that if the coach's comment is actually funny that he doesn't get a technical! Any way you look at it, NevadaRef's comment was funny!
Do you have no sense of humor? |

I don't think many of us are in this job to be appreciated by others. I myself officiate because I love it. I love the game, and because I may lack some skill, I still want to be apart of it. I don't care if every coach hates me, I'm still going to go out there and do my job. And in response to joking, I encounter some coaches quite often through the seasons, and some of them are fun people whom I will let get away with a bit of humour. A joke like the one that started this post is fine, but when the attitudes start to come out, its time to draw the line and give the warnings. I don't think i've had to give out a T for a misunderstood joke yet, and I hope i never do. |
