This forum is awesome. Let's face it, basketball officiating is a complex job that requires diligent refs. The forum promotes this. I wanted to start a thread about what I like and dislike about it.
I appreciate how issues arise in our daily/weekly refereeing that we can discuss on levels of rules and philosophy. There have been situations where I have learned to take a new perspective. There is a ton of experience on this forum. I always know that after coming to an interesting situation in a game that I can make a post and get a bunch of feedback about it. However, some posters will take any post that disagrees with them and make it a personal attack on the disagreeing party. It is sad really how this detracts from legitimate discussions and becomes ego fighting. Learning and sharing is good. Thanks. |
What I like: the discussions, but also the banter that gets mixed in...esp. all those disgusting pictures that Yankee-lover JR posts all the time...
What I don't like: All the mental images of Padgett in various stages of undress that keep popping up...yuck... And I still think the Yankees suck...even at .500... |
What I like is when authors create posts that could be forwarded to their mothers, wives and kids.

Likes: Posts that deal with tough plays (believe it or not, I miss crew's "gps" posts); posts about a person's first game at the "next" level; getting the coach's perspective from PA Coach and Hawks Coach; what seems like genuine comeraderie among many of us here, including the good natured ribbing.
Dislikes: All the morons that come out of the woodwork at tourney time (I wish we could just weed them out); surveys that re-appear every time things get slow (what's your favorite shoe? how much do you get per game?); no search function. |
This forum has been so valuable to my improvement on the court. I have many years of experience in the rec league arena, but this is my first year in the leagues requiring a license. I have an opportunity this summer to do a college recruiting camp for two weekends and I owe this forum for improving my skills to provide me this adventure.
Likes: The mechanic discussion as that is where I need want to improve. The association discussions i.e. assigning issues, reporting back when game situations occur, evaluation topics. Dislikes: The acronymns were difficult to learn at first. Softball/baseball use more of these. But I suggest to spell out more for use newbies. Also the personal inside jokes are hard to understand as I have not been around long enough to know everyone to a level to enjoy the jokes. Rick |

Likes: each person has a different point of view about the same situation.
dislikes: personal attacks, & off-season |
LIKE: The vbaluable discussion of rules, interps, handling situations, and some of the banter (it gets a bit much at times for my taste, but I can live with it). Overall, I am pleased to see a growing community of refs that want to share information and improve how they call games - it makes it better for all participants when the refs take things this seriously.
BORES ME (but I understand and simply ignore): Threads on mechanics (a necessary point for y'all, but tedious to me), and any thread on shoes, pants, belts (or not!), deoderant, how to keep your hairpiece on while running the court, etc. DISLIKE: When threads get overly silly, and when people just throw bombs back and forth. At times, a thread starts on a legitimate point and degenerates from that point because smebody takes things a little too personal. And I probably have been guilty too. but people can get so touchy that we can't even have a discussion of what might be an interesting topic. HATE: People who come here just to post attacks. This year is the worst I have seen, and I hope it stops. We all have opinions, but this is not your local sports radio call in show - call them if all you want to do is complain about how somebody hosed your team with a bad call. |

Hmmm, just thinking here (run, run away!). But is it possible to attach some kind of FAQ to this forum? It would make a handy place for newbies to go to learn things like what POI and other TLAs stand for.

BTW and FYI, this is JMO, but I really do LOL at some of MP's antics. ;)
Oh Yeah...that's just FWIW [Edited by RookieDude on Apr 2nd, 2004 at 02:17 PM] |
I love the discussions on philosophy, mechanics difference, issues related to moving up and advancing, what good camps to attend and what to do when you get there. Most of all I love the different opinions and views you see all over the country and world.
I really get bored out of my mind with the, "the official at my game did this........were they correct?" type of discussions. I also get really board with the repetitive rules debates over the same rules. Nothing wrong with discussing new rules or POEs to some extent, but to debate the 100 was to call a backcourt violation get old really quick. I hate when people take this board too seriously. Most people you will never meet, want to know or every work a game with. So I will never understand when someone gives a damn what someone does in on part of the country, when you know they do it differently in another part of the country. It is interesting to discuss those issues, but when folks start telling others what do to, because "their" evaluators want "me" to do it that way, is a bit over the top. One of the reasons I always try to make it clear, "where I live we do this....." It is up to you after that to realize that might not apply to your structure in your area. I work for many assignors and belong to more than one official's association. So what I do is not going to always translate. I really have no opinion on the personal attack part. Mainly because I am going to be successful regardless of what someone thinks. It is easy to get behind a computer and run their mouth, but when you are finished running your mouth, it did not make you a better official, your schedule or the level you are allowed to officiate is still the same and trying to belittle someone about it is not going to make them a worse official all of a sudden. I find them funny, because when they are directed at me, I still am asked to speak at camps or meetings, I still am asked to run associations or join boards, I am still asked to represent an organization that I belong to in something. And when Tony and I have gotten into it, no matter what I say to him or what he says to me, he still has done a State Final and I have not. And if I have respect or not, ultimately is with the people that I have worked with and have had to deal with me or anyone personally. That is why I always take on those that get personal, because it provides a great deal of humor and fun for me. Maybe I am sick that way. ;) Peace |

Go to google home page and type in "weapons of mass destruction" and hit the "I'm feeling Lucky" button instead. Read the error message carefully. Not sure how long that message will last. |

Thanks to cmathews.
These Weapons of Mass Destruction cannot be displayed
The weapons you are looking for are currently unavailable. The country might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your weapons inspectors mandate. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please try the following: Click the Regime change button, or try again later. If you are George Bush and typed the country's name in the address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. (IRAQ). To check your weapons inspector settings, click the UN menu, and then click Weapons Inspector Options. On the Security Council tab, click Consensus. The settings should match those provided by your government or NATO. If the Security Council has enabled it, The United States of America can examine your country and automatically discover Weapons of Mass Destruction. If you would like to use the CIA to try and discover them, click Detect weapons Some countries require 128 thousand troops to liberate them. Click the Panic menu and then click About US foreign policy to determine what regime they will install. If you are an Old European Country trying to protect your interests, make sure your options are left wide open as long as possible. Click the Tools menu, and then click on League of Nations. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Head in the Sand section and check settings for your exports to Iraq. Click the Bomb button if you are Donald Rumsfeld. Cannot find weapons or CIA Error Iraqi Explorer Bush went to Iraq to look for Weapons of Mass Destruction and all he found was this lousy T-shirt. |

Literally. BTW - the guys from the BBC show "The Office" introduced themselves at an American awards show by saying "Our show comes from England. You remember England - we used to rule the world before you did." The Brits are OK, not like that country full of cheese-eating surrender monkeys. |

I only searched the entire net. http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...oe=UTF-8&q=bfd BTW, first hit is a stock quote for a company called Boston Fed Bancorp, ticker symbol BFD. Now that's gotta be a good bank! |

So here we have a thread that degrades into silliness, and irrelevancy. But, there are some of us who LIKE that!
Seriously, what I like most about this board, is that it has been a tremendous help to me in my advancement. When I've had a lousy game and handled something poorly, I get advice, encouragement and a certain amount of comfort. When I get some good news, there's someone I can brag to with a minimum of political ramifications. And here's some rules help, some philosophy, and a very interesting overview of how things are different around the country. And when the games get few and far between, I can feed my jones here. Yea, it's like that! |
ditto on the personal attacks
I stopped posting long ago, my skin isn't thick enough.

BLARGE
One to add to the Basketball official's vernacular:
BLARGE = When two officials whistle a play and one is signaling a Block, while the other comes out with a Charge. |
