Ok. This is the first of four threads, all situations that came up at a weekend tournament (club basketball).

We were notified at half time of a player, team A, that was going to start in the second half whose number was not in the book. The coach was warned that this would result in a technical foul. He said to go ahead because he was going to start her for the 2nd half.

Team B had the AP arrow already. We began the half with Team B shooting the two technical foul shots. Then it was their ball at the division line for a throw in. I instructed that the arrow was not to be changed. My partner thought that it should change; he claimed that we do not double penalize team A. My thoughts were that this was not an AP throw in and therefore the arrow would not change.

Any thoughts?

Tell your partner to read casebook play 6.3.1SitB. And then apologize to you.

Same situation happend to my crew this year except we T'd the coach on his way to the locker room. We went in and double checked what we needed to do once halftime was over.

On a side note, from a strategic standpoint, the best way to handle this would be to have B inbound the ball and play on, then at the first stoppage of play after which B would be inbounding have the player not in the book sub in. Likely A will commit some violation or foul not too long after play has started and then all they are giving up is 2 shots. HS coach taught me this lesson. He said never commit a technical when you have more to lose than 2 shots. In otherwords if you have the ball or stand to get the possession arrow as in the case above, just don't get a T.
