"The other side of the country" as used, I'm guessing, means West of the Rockies.

In practicality, the other side of the country could be the rest of the United States, including the Lower Peninsula, but excluding Wisconsin.

Wisconsin folks and the U.P. folks are very, very simlar, ...and on the same side of the Lakes and the same side country.
