Love the forum. Always a reader, now a poster.

I have just completed my 4th year reffing HS Boys hoops. One rule has always given me trouble, no matter how many times I've gone over it - CORRECTABLE ERRORS! I'm sure this isn't the first post on the topic, but I need some help. Does anybody have a particular way they remember when an error is correctable? You know, the ROYGBIV (colors of the rainbow) type of thing? Or any other catchy/easier ways of remembering?

Basically, you have to catch it before or during the next dead ball after the clock has run. (This means that shooting a free throw doesn't matter, since the clock is stopped.)

So,
1. An error occurs during a dead ball and clock is stopped.
2. Play continues (ball becomes live) and clock runs.
3. Dead ball.
4. Catch and fix it now or never.
5. Ball becomes live again, it's too late now.

OR

1. An error occurs during a dead ball with the clock running.
2. Play continues (ball becomes live) and the clock continues to run.
3. Dead ball.
4. Catch and fix it now or never.
5. Ball becomes live again, it's too late.

Nevadaref, did you meet Tre last weekend? If you did, how do you think he did?

A free throw??

...actually the ball is 'live' during a free-throw...

Tre Maddox

Yes. He did a 4A boys semi and the 4A boys final. He did a nice job in the semi, but I did not see the final. I will see it later though as it will be on TV next week. I had a chat about him with RM and he believes that he is the #1 official in the assn down there. In his words, "He is the total package."
I also was told that he went over to LA with RM + someone else and worked the Weschester v. Oak Hill game this year because Oak Hill didn't want CA refs.
He seems quiet and we talked very little, but he was polite.
I did not have a state game myself, but still had a blast hanging out this weekend. It was by far the best relations I have ever seen btwn the North and South officials.
Best game: 3A boys semi: Moapa Valley 55, Manogue 54.

Yes, I know. But it also becomes dead after it. Therefore, if we shoot two by a wrong player, we would have a dead ball between the two free throws, but that wouldn't affect the time frame for correcting the error, since the clock didn't run yet.
Get my point?
Notice that I specified that the free throw attempt doesn't matter "since the clock is stopped," not "because the ball is dead," which we agree it is not!

Nevadaref, he is the package. I have talked to him a lot during the season and I told him just before he left that I thought he would get that game. If you can believe it, he didn't start last season (02-03) at the top rating for Southern Nevada. I talked to RM several times telling him that Tre had to be promoted.
I'm glad that the relations between the north and the south are improving. I really didn't feel it like others talked about. Tell Tony and Justin I said hello.

The easiest way is to have such a situation, "make something up" on the court, and read it in the rule book after the game.

After that, you'll make sure you never have another such situation.
