"Coach, are all your uniforms legal and are all your players wearing the uniform properly?
I think I know why Federation put in this rule, but to think that coaches are going to come to the pre-game meeting with their captains is expecting too much. We have a similiar rule in softball, but we have always met with the coaches. This is a little different. |

At the captains' meeting which is to be held at the 5 min. mark I ask for speaking captains. I tell them to bring any problems on the floor to our attention. I tell all captains to be responsible for their teammates. If any are getting out of control to get to them before we do. I then encourage them to play hard, play fair, play well and have fun. I try to say all this a briefly as possible.

Keep the pregame with captains very brief. DO NOT tell them how you are going to officiate or what you are going to call because "any thing you say can and will be used against you on the court." Set your parameters (what you are going to call) early in the game and have them ajust. Athletes will adjust, if not keep calling. I don't like calling a lot of fouls, but I also don't like a sloppy out of control game with coaches on my butt.
Keep the game between the free throw lines clean. Below the free throw lines have patience as this is scoring area. If you are going to call a foul wait until the player has started a try and penalize the defense. Also reward good defense - read that verticle and got to spot first. |
