Had a funny situation last night that got me thinking.

Player on team A loses a shoe as she's on the offensive end. The shoe migrates to the baseline where my partner picks it up to get it off the playing court. Player A keeps playing with one shoe. While holding the shoe, my partner calls a travel. I got a pretty good chuckle out of my partner's new mechanic.

It got me thinking, should we have blown the play dead to allow the player to put her shoe back on? It happened fairly quick and didn't pose a great safety risk.

Your thoughts are welcome.

NO. Options; 1) wait for a stopage in the clock. 2) when her team has possession, they may request a TO or while in possession they can try to play keep-a-way from the opponent while she puts her shoe back on.

If her team has the ball and is not attempting to move toward the basket, I would blow it dead and allow her to fix her shoe. To me it is no different than a pair of glasses on the floor, other than the breakage issue..

Big difference glasses break and shoes don't. Glasses falling off, the player isn't going to leave them. She will stop what she is doing a pick up the glasses, so no need to stop play for glasses. The only exceptions would be if they fall during rebounding and once the team who has to go the other end secures the ball, or a made basket, or if the team pulled the ball out. I think i've seen glasses maybe once every 6 or 7 years.

Agree with Bart. Glasses can be a safety item. Shoes aren't.

If her team was in possession of the ball, I would blow it dead. The shoes are still a injury potential. I can't tell you how many times I almost twisted an ankle stepping on a shoe I didn't see in the locker room when I was coaching. Either someone won't see the shoe lying in the way, and twist their ankle, OR the girl who lost the shoe will have her foot stomped on and break it. Never know what can transpire.

There are shoes flying all over the court, most with feet already in them. The potential to turn an ankle on a shoe is no different with someone's foot in it or not. A shoe is not a safety hazard and there's no sense blowing a play dead because someone loses a shoe. Glasses can break and broken glass is not a good thing to have on a gym floor. Apples and oranges.

any of you ever try to stop on a foot covered only in a sock? It can be a safety hazard, when they have the ball in team possesion and are not working toward the hoop, I am gonna stop it and let her put it back on. If you will look above I said the shoe was no different than glasses, except for the breakage issue...

If there is no advantage/disadvantage to be had, ex. team A is in control and not driving, stop play and let her put the shoe on! No harm done. It's just reasonable game management in my opinion.

I used to wait for an ideal time to blow the play dead after a loss of a shoe, but then i almost tripped over one. When i see a shoe fly, i blow the whistle right away. And send the person with the shoe to their bench to fix it.

And what rule are you using to send a player out of the game, instead of just letting them put the shoe back on?

This happened last night in a V game (boys). I blew the whistle for him to put his shoe on. JUCO - I would do the same thing as Dan.

wonder what the call would be from some of these refs that want to continue play if their shoe comes off??????

Personnally, if A has the ball and play has settled ....no fast breaks, then i would stop play for the shoe, eye glasses, contacts, .....common sense officiating!
