Boys 7th Grade Tourney this weekend.
2-whistle.
I am lead.

A1 attempts a FT by slamming the ball on the floor about 1/3 the way to the basket. The ball hit the rim before I "processed" what I had just observed and whistled it dead. The trail never whistled it dead.

A1's Coach wanted to know why I whistled it dead. He claimed it had been allowed in previous games. I calmly explained it was a violation because it failed to make contact with the rim BEFORE it hit the floor, just like an "airball" on a FT attempt. He accepted the explanation, but appeared like he STILL did not understand why it was a violation.

Yes, hitting the floor ends the try (4-40-4) and therefore the try failed to enter the basket or touch the ring before the free throw ended, so it is a violation. (9-1-3) Way to pick up your partner even thought you were lead. Give him first crack and then you have to get it right.

They could try this from the bench on my team

One of the nice things about knowing the rules is you can tell a kid that "It's not just that I won't allow it, it's against the rules." And I just love the loook they get when you tell them this.
