Team A has a sub (A6) kneeling in front of the table. A1 is advancing the ball to half court when B1 knocks the ball away from A1 toward the scorers table. As the ball bounces inbounds and crosses the plane going OOB A6 grabs the ball before it touches OOB. Would it make a difference in what you call depending on; a) B1 has a play on the ball and may have saved it inbounds. b) Neither A1 or B1 has a chance of saving the ball.

Either way I am interested in knowing how you would call this.

A6 is out of bounds, therefore the ball is OOB, last touched by B. A's ball. Unless A6 reaches onto the court (across the plane) AND B1 has a chance at making a play.

OK, that's the way I called it. Mainly because no player was within 10 feet of saving the ball from going OOB and the sub was just keeping the ball from going 3 rows into the stands.

Would you call it differently had a player been going for the save and the sub grabs the ball in front of the player? I think that is what I'm questioning. The ball didn't just hit the sub, he reached up and grabbed the ball.

Nope...wouldn't necessarily call it differently.
Heck, A6 might have done Team B a favor by grabbing the ball...Team B gets the ball OOB for sure now. They might not have got the ball when B1 went diving for the ball and threw it backwards toward the court.

A Veteran once told me:
Don't go looking for stuff...enough stuff happens during a game that you don't have to go looking for something to call.

Chuck is right. Since A6 was a substitute she is simply "an object" that causes the ball to go OOB similar to touching the stands etc... still A's ball.
