Try this! Last night I'm observing a game from Scorers table. Real nice Gym but ..... main floor could be 1 main or run crossways and be two (make sense?)by dropping baskets down. Also had Volleyball (long ways or two across) and "something else" marked. Anyway - there were two very solid stripes at the top of the key. First free throw of the game - Visitors shooter does the pre-shot routine towing a line 14 feet (wrong line) away. Referee's watching closley. Now the Visiting shooter (as you know) is right in from of the Home Coach (knows the floor) shooting. Just after the ball goes up he yells -"Look where he's standing!!!". Ball Missed. You make the call. |

Coach was being a nice guy otherwise he would have waited until he shot the second or at least made the first! Part of the pregame is getting on the floor and making sure you and your partner(s)are aware of the surroundings. Not to say it still couldn't happen. In this case, shame on the officials but he missed the shot, it was a violation anyway, so back him up to the 15 foot line and shoot the second and tell the coach thanks!

Captain' Meeting
This is something the officials should identify while observing warm-ups and bring up at the captain's meeting. I'm not a big fan of saying a lot of things at the captain's meeting, but this is something that should be identified.

It is a violation. Take the second shot from the proper line and move on.
I've worked on several courts this year with all the extra lines and we always make it a point to discuss this with the coaches and captains at the pre-game meeting. Whether or not they listen is another story. Grail |
