How long ago was the rule abolished requiring the team trailing (scorewise) to come out of a passive zone and aggressively defend the offensive team? This prevented the team that was ahead to simply stand and hold the ball.

Early or mid 70's or so, If I remember right.

You're off by a bit. I started in 1987 and we still had the "lack of action" rule then.

Didn't get abolished much after that though.

I think 87 or 88 could have been the last year. Don't know for sure. I know my high school lost the ball in a close game against Marion because of this rule. It was a conference game. If anyone is familiar with Indiana basketball you will remember that Marion dominated the state from 85-87. My high school played them in the finals in the first and third year. They called this run "Purple Reign" (school colors).

I'm not bitter and I barely remember this.............................................. ....really!
