I would like to get involved in basketball officiating. I have been a soccer referee for many years, and can ref at high levels in soccer. I would be a rookie in basketball, however, and would need to start at the youth league level. I live in NJ, and would appreciate any contacts or guidance anyone can give.

John,
contact your State HS organization. They can or should be able to put you in contact with a BB organization in your area. I know that IAABO is acitve on the east coast and I feel that they offer the best training material out there. Good luck |

Getting Started
I agree with Glenn's guidance. I am a 2nd yr Basketball official, so I know some of the anxieties you are experiencing as you start in this game. Your soccer experiences will be helpful in your acclimation to the court. I strongly suggest you find an experienced official (Mentor)as a partner and definitely "cut your teeth" in low-level youth games.
Good luck and Have fun!

The best advice I can give is to find someone's coattails to hang on to. Pick a mentor that is at a level that you would like to reach. When they have a game to work, tag along and watch. Ask them a ton of questions. It'll make them feel special.
Another tip would be to frequent this message board as often as possible. There are a ton of experienced guys and gals here. Just by reading their replies, you can learn a lot about game awareness and start to develop your own philosophy. Good luck! And remember, when you stop having fun, it's time to quit... |
