Tried this last night, too. I didn't fully master it, but I can see it's worth working on. Also, I've got to learn it for both left- and right- handed hand-offs.

I'd suggest raising the hand away from the thrower and counting with the hand closer to the thrower.

There's a picture of this technique in RefMag this month. Practice in front of the mirror until you look like the woman in the picture.
