I got my first big break today! 2nd year official, North Central Fl. Was assigned to the Freshman boys game of a huge rivalry (both state contenders at the V level). Had a good game, and as I headed into the locker room, one of our supervisors approached me and asked me if I would like to fill in for a sick person and do the Varsity game (he was working the game as well)! I gladly accepted and worked with two very good officials. As expected, the gym was packed from wall to wall on both sides with cops everywhere. Had a solid pregame and went over good specifics about the tendencies of both teams. High octane, fast paced game. Indeed, just as expected was a very close ballgame (3 point margin) until the last buzzer. Very good flor by both players and officials. Physical game, but that just happened to be the flow. Overall an awesome night and my best officiating experience to date!!!!!

Did you know this exact situation happened to a ref with the same exact name on the same exact day!!! It's listed elsewhere on this board!!!
What are the odds???

Congratulations! Being prepared and having someone in authority see your freshman game was very fotuitous. Now that you have 'broken the ice' you will have confidence to do games at higher levels. I am sure that the other 2 officials helped you a lot that night.
I remember doing my very first varsity game. What I learned from it: I wasn't ready! Very important learning experience. |
