Not sure what glitch is going on, but I could not see Raymond's question at the bottom. I had to do a quote to see it.

Peace

Right now the video is blocked so they will not let me publish it here. I will post it if it changes. Other videos were blocked at first and then allowed to post. Maybe that will happen here.

Peace

Didn't look like a volleyball open-hand type spike, but I can't be sure. Anyone else get eyes on that?

On a related note, has anyone called that before?
No, I have not and have not seen it. Steph Curry did this either this year or late last year, and it was called in one of his games.

Peace

Fisting ...

frezer11: fists the ball ... has anyone called that before?

I've called it, but not exactly as described.

Many decades ago, back when I was a junior varsity official.

After a made basket, no defensive pressure, A1 inbounds to A2, who nonchalantly punches the ball back to point guard A1 after he steps inbounds.

Something deep in the recesses of my mind told me (you know, that voice in your head), "He can't do that", so I sounded my whistle.

I had to make up a signal on the spot.

Varsity guys that followed me told me that I should not have called the punching the ball with a fist violation; that the rule was intended to keep the players safe and that it should only be called if the ball is punched in a crowd, like in a rebounding situation.

The rule doesn't say that. Hitting the ball with the fist is a violation, just like playing the ball with the hands is a violation in soccer. I have had to call a fisting the ball violation exactly once, in a middle school girl's game.

Those varsity guys were correct. This situation is precisely why the rules book has that page in the front that talks about knowing the intent and purpose of the rules so that they may be intelligently applied.

Nevadaref, and my varsity guys, are probably correct, but in the video above Steph Curry's punched ball does not appear to be a reckless act that could create a safety hazard, yet the violation was called on one of the biggest basketball stages, with the best players, and the best officials, in the world.

Of course that's the NBA, not the NFHS.
