Fun With An Injured Player …

Injured player - Do officials properly stop play? Were officials correct to stop play in this situation?

Two choices: The officials were correct in stopping play. The officials were incorrect in stopping play.

My comment: The officials were correct in stopping play. Player was down in a congested area. Stayed down for a second, or so. Struggled to try to get back up. Safety first.

I'm ok with them stopping it. The offense stopped attacking and passed the ball back out to the top to call a new play.

IAABO Survey Says …

Disclaimer: For IAABO eyes only. Below is not a NFHS interpretation, it's only an IAABO interpretation which obviously doesn't mean a hill of beans to most members of this Forum.

IAABO Play Commentary: Correct answer: The officials were correct in stopping play.

If an official determines a player on either team is severely injured or in imminent danger, play should be stopped immediately. Bench personnel/training staff should be beckoned onto the court to attend to the injured player. If an official determines an injury is not severe and the injured player is on the defensive team officials should allow play to continue if the offensive team is advancing the ball and actively pursuing a chance to score. The official closest to the injured player will stay with the player and sound the whistle when the offensive team is no longer advancing, or the ball is released on a try for goal. The play should then be stopped to attend to the injured player. (IAABO Manual p. 26 Section 23)

In this play, after the injury occurs, the offensive team passes the ball back to the midcourt area away from the basket where the guard holds the ball. Because the offensive team was not actively pursuing a chance to score at that time, the officials appropriately stopped play to have bench personnel/training staff attend to the injured player.

Here is the breakdown of the IAABO members that commented on the video: The officials were correct in stopping play 93% (including me). The officials were incorrect in stopping play 7%.
