I have often wondered this myself. As Q2 would have ended and technically speaking there is no penalty carryover (you’re simply correcting an error within the allowable window), I’d interpret that you’d shoot at the basket for the second half.

I believe that there are reasonable cases for both. One could contend that based upon the rules for starting and ending a quarter (or period of play), these CE FT attempts are part of the third quarter (when the ball is first made live after the halftime intermission) and that the scorer should enter them under that column in the official scorebook.

However, I also understand that there is an argument to be made that they are “related activity” and therefore still part of the second quarter, which everyone thought had ended, but actually had not, and thus should be attempted at the team’s first half basket.

1) No penalty can be carried over to the next period.

2) The 2nd Half has not started yet, therefore the FTs are attempted at the Basket that Team A's 1st Half Basket. Why would you attempt them at Team A's 2nd Half Basket.

I had this happen to my partner and me in an AAU Girls's Qualifier decades ago. There was less than 10 seconds and we only awarded the 1st 2 of 3 FTs to A1. We were realized our CE while we were in the dressing room. When we came out we explained the situation to both HCs and had A1 attempt the 3rd FT at Team A's 1st Half Basket.

While we believed the 2nd Q had ended, it turns out that it hadn't. I believe the shots will be part of the 2nd Q and at the same end as the team were going in the 2nd Q.

Since 2Q hadn't ended, do you put 10 minutes back on the clock for the halftime intermission?

If any free throws are successful (maybe unsuccessful free throws are also recorded), they will be scored in the second period in the scorebook.

While some of this is academic and fun to discuss, in states that have period limits for players who participate at different levels (freshman, junior varsity, varsity), where officials normally recluse themselves from any jurisdiction, this may be the one time where officials get involved with the discussion and have some impact.

It depends on how good the hospitality room is.
