Interesting video question
I found a YouTube video of sports videos today while goofing off. The last video, after several Shaq and Chocolate Thunder backboard breaking dunk videos is a high school girls game which has a malfunction of its own.
Shooter shoots a free throw and as the ball hits the front of the rim, the entire rim drops to the floor, becoming detached from the backboard. What is the proper ruling on this? I would have to say it would be a replacement free throw upon the rim being properly and safely fixed. If it can't be fixed then state association rules regarding postponements and cancellations would apply correct? |

This is going to fall under Points Not Covered In The Rules.
When the game resumes: If the rim broke during a free throw, I'm allowing a replacement free throw. If the rim broke during a non-free-throw try, I'm going to the arrow I realize that's a bit inconsistent, but it feels like the right way to resume the game. If the rim can't be replaced or repaired, move to another gym/court (if available), or suspend the game and let the Powers That Be figure out if/when it'll be resumed. |
