UNC Pitt Video Request - Last Second Foul - Shooting?
7 seconds to go in the game. UNC is fouling Pitt on purpose to avoid the 3 point shot. Pitt knows this is coming and Pitt player seems to start his shooting motion (albeit from half court) before the foul.
Would anyone have a shooting foul on this? Watching live I agreed with the official, but this started a big debate with my roommate. Thanks. |
Saw a poor quality video from ESPN with the shooter blocking out a good look at what the defender did. I think the shot probably got off cleanly. But *IF* there is contact there, it *HAS* to be called. That said, L was out wide to have a second opinion, so if two officials passed on this, it was probably a good no call.
Two, maybe three years ago in a 7-10 men's tournament game involving Iowa State (close game, down to the wire), a foul on a three from the corner at the buzzer was not called. Should have been. I think as officials, in an effort to be 100% certain on game impacting calls, we sometimes choke. Being human is hard! |

It's (1) nowhere near half court and (2) not even close to being a foul. In the (admittedly) bad quality pic below, the ball is already well gone. Maybe one of our video experts can put it up here. http://fronheiser.net/UNC.JPG |

I am not talking about the last shot. UNC fouls on purpose with somewhere between 9-7 seconds left in the game. Pitt knows that UNC is going to foul so as Pitt is getting fouled he chucks up a prayer hoping that the ref will award 3 free throws instead of 1-1. My question was if anyone would actually rule this a shooting foul? Still looking for video of the play. |
Here are the two plays:

No, that's not really close, announcer. That's not really close.
|
Play 1 - foul before "act of shooting"
Play 2 - no block foul on the shot, but was there a moving screen foul on the original guarder |

Doesn't matter if he got fouled; he traveled twice and may have carried it near mid-court.
|
Game awareness and probability. That guy isn't making that shot with five whole seconds left; his coach would kill him.
Halfway decent acting job, but wasn't fooling anyone in stripes. |
It's obvious why some people post here and others work these games.
|
Play 1: Shooting foul, 3 shots
Play 2: Nothing |
1. He's fouled and then offense throws his arms up. No shot. Good try but not good enough.
2. Nothing to talk about. |

If I were a coach and you ruled this a shooting foul, I'm likely getting tossed. |

Ha, I think I'll change that. Arem would go to jail..... |
That is definitely not in the act of shooting.

Smart play by the offensive player, he saw the take foul coming and went into the shooting motion. It's defendable on video. Make him earn it at the stripe. Worst thing that happens is the game is tied and UNC has the ball to win the game.

Giving him 3 FTs would bring on much worse than that.... |

If you call this a shooting foul, I think you are giving 4 or 5 FTs (I forget how many FTs for an unsporting T by a coach in NCAAM) ;) |

The one where I'm not my own worst enemy. Duh.

Seems as if you are in the one which bashes the 99% of the officials who post here who will never work an ESPN game for expressing their opinions on a video clip.

And for the record Rich's line was spot on. |

OK, HS, "adults", and below. Never college unless you count a couple JUCO scrimmages. And yes, never very good at it, but asked a lot of questions. |
