Well when you put it that way.... I suppose you're correct.

IMHO at least in regards to assist the shot clock operator, if they need hand holding on the simple stuff, it needs to go into the game report and the assignor should be encouraging the game site to replace them.

If I recall correctly the "point towards the court" after a made basket is a holdover from a time when shot clock keepers needed to be reminded to reset the shot clock.

In this modern era the signal is superfluous and has developed into a kind of 'negative signal' used to say "marginal contact, we are playing on".
