Two of the officials working the WSU/Vandy game are showing very little hustle, taking their sweet time in getting to home position for the C.

crosscountry55 Tue Mar 15, 2016 10:21pm

Conversely, I thought the FGCU/FDU crew rotated waaaaay too much. They were hardly ever motionless. Looked like a carousel.

No, not Szelc, he is moving pretty well.

And he gets Stallings with a T that Breeding seemed to want to ignore. Stallings must have thought he was back on his court in Nashville the way he walked down the end line.

Breeding (whom I only know from seeing him the tournament every year) gives off an air as if he doesn't want to be in Dayton.

Haha I bet you're right! I too thought Szelc was moving well, there was one time where Breeding rotated early during a shot and Szelc literally ran from T to C while still marking the three point shot! I thought Breeding did get the Vandy coach though, Breeding ended up at Slot opposite after the tech shots.

Cuz I didn't know who BNR was referring to? Why, is that not something I'm allowed to speculate on? AFAIK this isn't the Facebook group where the admin there would probably ban someone for saying that.

Rich Wed Mar 16, 2016 08:13am

So you have no problem with picking 2 of the crew, seemingly at random, and saying they're probably the ones who look lazy.

No, I won't ban you for that, but I won't hesitate to tell you how incredibly stupid it is.

I was watching the game too, those were the guys I thought BNR was referring too. It isn't a big deal talking about who does what, I'd say the majority of D1 guys float high from the FTLE and take their time getting down there.

As I see it my guessing who BNR is referring to in his post is no different than BNR saying he thinks one of the officials looks like he doesn't want to be there. How is what he wrote any different? Neither of us are ripping anybody, are we not allowed to share our opinion?

And he took a fall as he was coming off the endline to signal a PC foul with about a minute or so before halftime. Looked like he slipped and caught the leg of a player and went down.

I guess I didn't watch as many games as I thought this year and he probably didn't work too many AAC games.

No one from this crew (not even the alternate) will work this weekend games. The committee did not grade this game very well; not only play calling but administration of some penalties. The alternate was supposed to correct (assist with) a procedure but did not.

This sounds like a good learning opportunity. What was the procedure/penalty that was incorrectly adjudicated?

There were several plays from that game that I found questionable. For there to be a best crew they're also have to be crews that have off days.

Attention haters! Tom Eades working the Elite Eight.

refinks Sun Mar 27, 2016 08:10pm

What is the rule regarding officials that work the Final Four or the National Championship game? I thought I had read somewhere that if you work a Sweet Sixteen or an Elite Eight game, you are ineligible to work the Final Four or the National Championship. Maybe I'm wrong, are there any such restrictions?

Rich Sun Mar 27, 2016 08:11pm

The 10 will come from the 36 that worked this week.

Gotcha, so maybe it's if you work a Sweet Sixteen game, you won't work an Elite Eight? In going through the names, I didn't see any duplicate names for Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen.

I can pretty much guess at least a few of the guys that will be working next weekend. I'll be shocked if Higgins isn't. I'm hoping Kimble and Clark get a chance.

My understanding is that the alternate is the alternate for all 3 games. Is that correct?

And does anyone know what the pay is for the alternate compared to the floor officials?

I see that Dorsey is the alternate, but he did not work any Elite 8 games. Does anyone know why that would be? It seems like the alternate would be the 10th ranked official from the Elite 8 games?

If I remember right, was an alternate as well during the Elite 8 weekend.

You don't have to work the Elite 8 to be eligible for the Final Four. You need to work a regional semi final or final.

The 10 are selected from all 36 that worked the Sweet 16/Elite 8.

Ok, not much to talk about so far. Relatively easy game to officiate thus far. Crew is doing well. Tom Eades almost got run over once going T to L while curling in at the endline. Glad that didn't happen.

So given the relative lack of anything to talk about in the officiating world, would anyone like to talk about the other thing I noticed in the first half, namely the glare on the court caused by the wrap-around scoreboard lights? I haven't noticed it as much in the beginning of the second half, so I'm wondering if it was a TV camera lens issue, or the court lighting was adjusted, or perhaps the high-gloss finish on the floor is becoming more dull?

I'm thinking they increased the court lighting and dimmed the wrap-around boards.

You'd think they would test this during shoot-arounds in the day or so leading up to the games.

There's an article on CBS Sports this morning about it.

I was actually in attendance last night and didn't notice it. Must of been the camera angles.

There is only one official that has refereed a Final Four game in four separate decades. The answer might be surprising.

Jody Silvester. I looked it up.

I shouldn't have had to, though. Silvester was local to me growing up.

Fine official. I had to look it up too. :)

Question here for all those who have done games? Would you say making the call on the buzzer beater in a championship game one of the toughest(if not the toughest) because the call WILL determine a winner of the game(or have OT). Tonight's call was not that close but I'm wondering if thats a big worry, making a mistake on a call like that.

eyezen Mon Apr 04, 2016 10:55pm

On this stage, if you think it through, not really. I'm not saying your hearth won't be beating fast but you have a gazillion angles and super-duper slow mo to get it right regardless of the call on the floor.

On another note, just think if it WAS waved off, I hoped they had some brooms handy.

Eh, it's as big a worry as any other call. Hell of a lot easier with replay though. I think we're officially done with the days of counting the bucket and running off the court. Now we gotta check the monitor even if it's obvious like this one.

I was thinking of a preventative officiating move I try to incorporate. During the last timeout, (or any chance near the end of the game) might it not be a good idea to instruct both assistant coaches, or whoever would be willing, to advise the benches to NOT rush the court on any last second play? I usually try and do that just to avoid crazy technicals, premature celebrations, etc.

Whaddya think, good, bad, stupid, smart?

The only person in Houston last night with a faster trigger finger than Kris Jenkins, was the dude controlling the confetti cannons! Ball barely went through and streamers were in the air!

Waste of energy in a situation like last night.

I'm trying to figure out why I just got a notification email for the previous post in this thread.
