If you're working a JV game before a Varsity game, you shouldn't have to ask to sit in on the pre-game. You should be walking in on it when your game ends.

Ask in a generic way if any of the Varsity crew has anything for you. Leave your gear in the locker room and go in there with them at halftime to pick it up. A guy like me will ask you if you saw anything in our game and if you have any questions.

Back when I was a junior varsity official, I always started the conversation with, "So, what did you guys see out there?", or, "Did you see anything that I can improve upon?", or, "Got any constructive criticism for me?".

Even now, as a varsity official, if the junior varsity guys stick around (which is happening less and less around here), I will ask them, "So, what did you guys see out there?".

Exactly.

Dad, YMMV. In my chapter, the refs who are serious about improving, ask questions (not directly to get better games, but to learn and hopefully move up), and learn the difference between the good and bad things. And they have a better chance to advance, as a consequence.

I completely agree and this is the right mindset. I just don't think staying after to watch official who may or may not be good was worth my time, especially since I'd have a hard time deciphering the two(As a rookie).
