Indeed it was. Prior to 1983 according to the NFHS Handbook.

Do we need to send Jr. into the attic? I honestly remember it being this way for as long as I knew about differences between rules, but that doesn't really mean a whole lot.

It was great. Basket counts on this end, shoot the one and one (assuming bonus) down the other end. Both coaches don't know whether to yell at you, or not. They just stood there dumbfounded.

Timing sounds right -- I played in the early 80's and remember shooting 1 and 1 (there was no double bonus back then) on after-the-release charges when the shot went in. As I recall back then, refs were also far more willing to call a charge when the defender was under or nearly under the basket -- the idea being that the shooter was obligated to make his shot without making that illegal contact, even if the only reason for the defender to set up there was to make him have to make the shot under control without the contact. (Back then also true that only the NBA had the team control foul concept, so illegal screens could lead to FTs, too.)

Very astute observation.

Depending on the age of an adult, we grew up with that cartoon which is now a movie. ;)

Peace
