H.S. Games: Cheerleaders along the End Line.

1) I do not know how to set up a poll, so if some one would like to insert a poll into this thread I would appreciate it. My poll question is: Does your state allow cheerleaders to cheer along the End Line? Yes or No. And if Yes, what is the minimum space required for the cheerleaders to be along the End Line.

2) Anybody can answer the questions in (1) in regular posts below.

MTD, Sr.

MTD, Sr.

I keep them outside the 3 point lines.

Yes they are allowed in AZ and I just tell them they wouldn't want an old sweaty man running into them and they back off to let me work.

Where else would you allow them? It's a little cramped along the sidelines.

It all depends on the size of the gym, the unobstructed areas around the court, and the safety of players, and the officials. It will vary from site to site.

I once had an adult fan standing against the wall on the endline of a very cramped gym. He kept getting in my way as the lead. I asked him to please move over to the side. He replied that he was the school's principal and that he would stand where he wanted. I countered that I was in charge of the safety of all the participants, including the officials, and that he should move. He moved.

This.

Cheerleaders all over the place depending on the size of the gym and where there is room.

Never heard of any cheerleader rule, sorry MTD.

Whenever I have a situation where a player is going to be inbounding in the midst of a group cheerleaders, I will occasionally tell the player, "Don't touch the cheerleaders".

A few think it's a real rule. Most get it, especially the cheerleaders.

And no, this is not one of Mark Padgett's rules.

Shouldn't it be vice versa?

Good point. Maybe, in the future, I'll mix it up a little.

My rule is "don't touch the hot moms." Of course, I have an exemption. :)

My state says "Follow the NFHS rules and mechanics". That's about all the guidance we get.

SAK Sun Dec 13, 2015 09:23pm

If I run into them, they are too close. That is where the line is drawn.

You got that right! - did that once about 10 years ago. I was sprinting down the sideline covering a fast break when one of the cheerleaders leaned into the court to get a better look. I saw her at the last scond out of the corner of my eye and tried to adjust - we hit glancing shoulder to shoulder - not much of a contest...175# of me at full speed vs. maybe 115# of her....she went flying & slid on her backside for about 15 feet. Fortunately she wasn't injured.

We don't have any specific rules, but if we think there is a hazard or they may interfere with play we make them move.

AL sticks them in the stands.

UNIgiantslayers Mon Dec 14, 2015 09:21am

In the game Friday night, the cheerleaders were 2 deep along the baseline. It's a pretty standard high school gym with a wall behind them, so there was no room along the baseline and I felt pretty squeezed. I hadn't run into this issue before so I let it slide but it sounds like in the future I should tell them single file or get lost?

Preferable to speak to the adult in charge of them and inform them of your safety concerns. At a minimum I let them know they need to be outside of the 3-point line.

Kansas Ref Mon Dec 14, 2015 01:48pm

Kansas allows cheer teams to cavort along the end line; this prevents me to not be able to drop as deep as I'd like to in the L.

Is it disconcertion when the visitor team is shooting a FT and cheer leaders are rattling their poms poms (mind you they are not saying anything) but you still hear this audible "sshh shhh shhh" sound their pom poms are making as B1 is shooting the FT. I let it slide, thinking that there's a limit to the amount of regulating that I want to be doing during a game--I've got enough to worry about OK.

Ah, yes. Stacked cheerleaders.
Huge issue for me in that I've sprained ankles twice, each time rolling them over when I stepped on cheerleaders' feet.
Safety issue. Politely addressed at first by tactfully asking if they can back up and give me room when they see me coming, which they typically do. If that doesn't work, I have asked the event manager who has asked their coach to move them.
I wouldn't move them myself without going to the event manager and/or their coach. Always worked when I needed to.

BatteryPowered Mon Dec 14, 2015 02:15pm

I have had games where the cheerleaders are on the end line as there is limited/no room along the sideline. If it is really tight, before the game I just walk over to them and say "Ladies. We are going to be running around here and moving a lot with little or no chance to watch for you. Help us by staying alert and moving out of the way. Remember, if you get in the way your uniform will make it real easy to decide which team gets the technical."

Would I whack a team because of the cheerleaders? Probably not unless they got in the way repeatedly...but they don't know that. :p

JRutledge Mon Dec 14, 2015 02:45pm

Our state says we are to have 3 feet around the perimeter of the entire court. Cheerleaders are to give that amount of space at least when we are on their end of the court. Not always as possible, but most cheerleading squads understand we can move them if they do not comply. I did have a big problem one time, but that is a story for another day.

Peace

State? Isn't this a rule? Well rule with adjustments...

OKREF Mon Dec 14, 2015 03:44pm

My state. Anywhere along the end line is fine, except they must stay out of the basket area. Lane line to lane line.

I love the look of a 17-year old girl when I tell her that I need her to move back and give me some space to work....its the look that says, "who does this old sweaty guy think he is......"

Welpe Mon Dec 14, 2015 03:55pm

Not that I am aware of.

The NF does not set the procedures for all things. I know of some states that do not even allow cheerleaders on the floor area at all.

Peace

Cheerleaders like me because I'm very polite when I ask them to step back.
