NFHS rule on headbands

Can a headband with tails (basically a band that is tied in the back) which meets all other criteria, be legally worn?

SC Official Sun Dec 06, 2015 06:46pm

No.

To amplify, this is a new rule this year. The tails are officially called "extensions." Skylar Diggins made them a fad and so now this new restriction is playfully known as the "Skylar Diggins Rule."

SITUATION 4: An official notices members of Team A are wearing headbands that have extensions. RULING: Illegal. The coach should be informed that the headbands with extensions are illegal and the players will not be allowed to enter the game wearing them. (3-4-5b)

I can't think of any legit reason for the "Skylar Diggins"-style headbands to be banned. Pretty sure the NFHS rules committee has better shit to do.

I can't think of any reason why an official would care either way and take up any of his/her day complaining about the rule change unless they have stock in the company producing the headbands.

I would think an official trying to advance his career would have better things to discuss.

I thought you knew complaining about ______ is the favorite pastime of most officials! Case in point: your complaning about my complaining on a stupid rule that I will probably enforce anyway! :D

I think they're usually non-elastic materials (or at least much less elastic than typical headbands). As such, they are more likely to do damage if a finger gets caught in them than would be done with an elastic band.
