I wonder what the umpire-only discussion was about. I wouldn't expect that on a traditional appeal play.

I don't know the answer, but logic would dictate that a challenge, if upheld would call the runner out on appeal and negate the advance. Why a challenge would be made in the 3rd inning of a scoreless game, I have no idea.
