National Anthem Standoff

In my email this morning:

National Anthem Standoff:

Any umpire shall eject any player, coach, manager or trainer for violations of the Coaches & Players Code of Ethics, p. 10. Conferences may choose to implement additional penalties (see Appendix D) The UIC is to warn the head coach of the offending team that should any player not return to his dugout area immediately after the playing of the National Anthem, the head coach and player(s) will be ejected immediately.

Here is a video clip that demonstrates what is happening. Head Coaches: this is a violation of NCAAplaying rules and the umpires are to strictly enforce this rule.

The video looks staged.

It's not.

So where did the "you first" thing get started?

This video is a couple of years old. Has there been a rash of similar incidents?

Apparently in some of the earliest games this season -- out west was the description in the email I received.

If they're sending out emails (and I received one from the NCAA as well as both my coordinators), it's happening.

the games we play

The things that kids will come up with these days …. sign of the times.
Have to give them an A for creativity.

Thanks

Two thoughts:
  1. As a UConn grad that's just embarrassing
  2. I've always thought the music of The Red Hot Chili Peppers should be elevated to the status of national anthem. Glad these teams took care of that for me.

NCAA HQ had to put out an email on this? Seems like a no-brainer to me that the players are doing something unsporting.

The manner of enforcement needed to be clarified. This is a situation in which there are options all the way from doing nothing to ejecting every swinging Richard.

The NCAA is like my border collie when it sees sheep on one side of a pasture.

To an average person, it appears to be just a flock of grazing sheep, but my dog thinks IT'S A PROBLEM AND IT NEEDS TO BE SOLVED!

I guess the NCAA assumes its umpires aren't savvy enough to handle the situation then, huh?

If "Hey coach, get them back in the dugout" doesn't work, a quick ejection of the head coach would put an end to these shenanigans. Shame on the umpire who does nothing, and equal shame on the umpire who just runs everybody.

It's all in the name of consistency.

This video is a bit old, but I don't see anyone trying to put a stop to this.

I think I could, and afterwards a report to assigner that would make its way to conference should end it going forward.
