Ouch!

Word to the wise: Wear your cup, no matter your assignment!

Yep,

To quote (again) Dave Heaverlo (ex Mariner and A's relief pitcher):

"I even wear my cup when I watch baseball on TV!"

And fellow umpires think I'm crazy for wearing a cup on the bases.

Opinions on the BR's little juke toward 2nd? Anyone have anything there? Unfortunately, U1 wasn't looking... but I can definitely forgive him for that, considering.

I don't. Probably never will, even watching videos like this. I had one go through my legs when working U1 in a 4-man crew this year. Missed a cup (had I been wearing one) by mere inches. Didn't change my mind.

So did the umpiring crew after they got together to talk about it.

Sure looked to me like he was watching. Watch it again.

The point is, that the call was handled correctly. U1 had to rule on the tag by what he saw. But he apparently recognized that he may not have seen enough to make a judgment, being somewhat distracted.

But who should have made the final ruling? I noticed it was PU who signaled the out. Was it because it was his judgment that ruled he had made an attempt?

I think that was McClelland, the crew chief. SOP for MLB.

I just watched again, and paused it. At the moment the runner begins the juke toward 2nd, the umpire (understandably) is looking straight down (02:18) - he's just gotten his head turned at the end of the juke. (Also, based on his safe call, I think it's safe to assume he didn't see it.)
